German Brutto-Netto in 2026: tax class, church tax, and social insurance

How EStG §32a, Solidaritätszuschlag, GKV, pension insurance, and tax class change German take-home pay—and what this model does not treat as a Lohnabrechnung.

German net pay is income tax plus employee social contributions. Tax class mainly changes monthly withholding, not the final annual income-tax liability by itself. Social insurance is a large, predictable share of gross pay up to the contribution ceilings.

Income tax tariff

The 2026 tariff in EStG §32a is a formula, not only a table of flat bands. There is a basic allowance, two linear-progressive zones, then 42% and 45% zones. Solidaritätszuschlag applies above its allowance. Church tax, if you opt in, is 8% of income tax in Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg and 9% in other states in this model.

Tax classes

Class I is the default single profile. Class II includes single-parent relief. Class III/V splitting is an approximation of joint assessment, not a full spouse payroll model. Class V and VI withholding depends on the other job or spouse and is not calculated as a separate payroll slip here; the engine uses the annual baseline and warns you.

Social insurance

Pension, unemployment, statutory health, and long-term care insurance use 2026 published rates and ceilings. Statutory health uses an average additional contribution. Private health uses the monthly premium you enter. Actual Krankenkasse rates and care-insurance add-ons for childless employees can differ. Saxony’s unemployment-insurance split is a known limitation.

How to set the profile

Open the German tax profile, set Bundesland, class, age group, children, health cover, pension, and church tax. Then read annual net, not only the monthly withholding you remember from a previous job. The insights page reports a marginal deduction rate and tax-related workdays against the German earnings reference.
