UK take-home pay in 2026–27: income tax and National Insurance

England and Wales bands, the personal allowance, and employee Class 1 National Insurance from HMRC 2026–27 rates—plus what this profile leaves out.

A UK salary is reduced by income tax and employee National Insurance. They use different thresholds. A raise can change one, both, or neither, depending on where you sit on the two scales.

Income tax

This profile uses England and Wales bands and the standard personal allowance for 2026–27. Scottish bands are not included. The personal allowance tapers at high incomes in the published rules; check HMRC if your gross is in that range.

National Insurance

Employee Class 1 NI (category A) uses the HMRC 2026–27 thresholds and rates. It is not income tax. Directors, category letters other than A, and student-loan deductions are outside the profile.

What to ask your employer

Ask for the tax code, whether a workplace pension is deducted via salary sacrifice, and whether the role is paid monthly or four-weekly. Those items change the payslip even when annual tax is close to this model. Use the calculator for the annual England-and-Wales employee picture, then reconcile with the first payslip.
