A practical checklist for moving to another country for work

Tax residence, payroll country, healthcare, pension, housing, and work authorization—the items that change take-home pay after you accept an international offer.

International offers fail in the details. The salary looks strong; the payroll country, tax residence, or housing market does not. Walk through this checklist before you sign.

Tax residence and payroll country

Confirm where you will be tax resident and which country’s payroll will withhold tax. They are not always the same. A US company paying you through a German contract withholds German wage tax. Remote work from another country can create a permanent establishment or dual-residence problem. Split-year moves have special rules in the UK, Canada, and Germany. This calculator models a full-year employee in one country; it does not model dual residence.

Healthcare and social insurance

In the US, health insurance is usually a separate deduction or employer plan. In Germany, statutory health and long-term care insurance are earnings-based up to a ceiling. In France, employee social contributions are a large share of the gap between gross and net. In Switzerland, mandatory health insurance is paid outside payroll and is not in this model. Ask what the employer provides and what you will pay yourself.

Pension and unemployment

US Social Security, Canadian CPP/QPP, UK National Insurance, German pension insurance, and Irish PRSI are not optional in the standard employee profiles. Employer matches and occupational pensions (Swiss second pillar, UK workplace pension) can matter as much as salary and are only partly modeled here. Ask for the employee contribution rate and the employer match in writing.

Housing before you land

Use a dated city snapshot as a floor, not a quote. GrossNetGuide’s city figures are community-reported Numbeo observations with an observation date. Add your own groceries, transport, and childcare. A 1-bedroom city-centre rent in San Francisco, Zurich, or London can consume a third to half of net pay; Berlin, Vienna, or Manchester usually leave more room.

Work authorization and timing

Visa waiting time, start-date delays, and whether you can work while the permit is processed change the first-year cash picture. Relocation packages should be compared as cash, not as a reason to ignore a weaker net salary.

Currency risk

If your savings are in another currency, a strong local salary can still lose value when you convert. Keep the comparison in local currency first. Convert only with a dated rate and a note that the rate will move.
